The culture of Himachal Pradesh is extremely rich, which can be seen in the day-to-day lives of the local people. People of Himachal pradesh are very co-operative,friendly and posses warm nature.They are famous for there colorful dresses,distinguished physical characters and untouched simplicity. Agriculture is beleived to be the main source of livelihood but now a days lot of people are dependent on tourism and related activities. As with the time Himachal Pradesh is getting good name in the tourism world. Also Government is trying its best to generate the tourism related oppurtunities for the local people.

Himachal Pradesh is famous for many things. Different areas are having different specialities.Mainly it is famous for beautiful handicraft items.The shawls specially of kullu , leather works, carpets, paintings,copper work, woodwork and paintings of the land are all evocative of the rich culture of Himachal Pradesh. Kullu is famous in the country and world for Dussehra which is celebrated in the city for almost 15 days and large people from all over the world gather here to enjoy on this auspicious ocassion and to get in touch with the local culture of Himachal Pradesh.

Population of the state consists of medley of tribes, all speaking their own language. Near about 90% of the population of Himachal Pradesh comprises of Hindus.In some areas of the state we can find majority of Buddhist and Tibetan's.Large Population comprises of Pangwalis,Lahulis,Gujjars and Kinnauris. Kinnauris are known in the state for their beauty and ornate jwellery.


Dance & Music

Dance And Music for the Himachalis is almost as indispensable as food, air and water. Every festive ocassion whether it is small or big is celebrated with dance and music.Dance forms from region to region are higly varied and reflects the rich culture and tradition of Himachal Pradesh.

Various dances performed in the state are:


Kinnaur Dance  Losar Shona Chuksam
Agricultural festival dance performed by the Kinnauris in which the movements depict all activities from sowing to reaping ogla (barley) and phaphar (a local grain).It also includes innovative pieces like mime.

Chamba Dance  Dangi
Dangi is one of the popular folk dances of the Chamba area. It is performed in lines and semicircle models, and is generally performed by Gaddi women during festivals, weddings and on any special ocassion.

Sirmaur Dance  Gee Dance
This dance is performed during the Lohri Festival. Singers stand in a curve with instrumentalists while individual dancers (boys or girls) rise one by one to dance to the music.

Burah Dance It is a type of macho martial dance in which men flourish their axes in big open movements.

Kullu dance  Naati Dance
Naati Dance of Kullu is part of all celebrations.In this Dancers link their hands and move in step to varying rhythms.There are 13 styles in total.During this dance, dancers wear traditional dress which consists of churidaars, sashes,swirling tunics and decorated caps. This is one of the famous dance of Himachal Pradesh.

Festivals & Fairs

The endless succession of festivals and fairs forms an important part of the cultural life of Himachal Pradesh. In every region from time to time various festivals are celebrated in traditional way.Out of all Kullu dussehra is one of the famous around the world.Every festival in the state has it's own importance and is being carried out from decades.There are some festivals, which are even linked with the lifestyle of the people, change of seasons and harvesting.During the festival season people adorn colorful dresses and accesories.
Amongst these fairs and festivals are the Kullu Dussehra, Mani Mahesh Chhari Yatra (Chamba), Lavi Trade Fair (Rampur), Naina Devi Fair (Bilaspur) , Shivratri Fair (Mandi), Minjar Fair (Chamba), Vrajeshwari fair (Kangra),Jwalamukhi Fair (Jwalamukhi), Renuka fair (Sirmaur), Shivratri Fair (Mandi) and Holi Fair (Sujanpur).

Talent, creativity and hardworking nature of Himachal Pradesh people can be seen from the works of their art and craft.Himachal Pradesh is well known and has rich heritage of handicrafts.The mind-boggling range includes carpets,shawls(specially pashmina),kullu border caps,silver and metalware,leather works,paintings,grass shoes,woollen socks,wooden works etc.The demand of these products has increased not in a country but also outside the country.So earning a good foreign exchange and also giving employment to large number of people.
